During this blog series, we talk to accomplished digital marketing professionals from a variety of backgrounds about their career journeys with the aim of inspiring jobs seekers, aspiring freelancers and the trailblazing entrepreneurs amongst you!

In this week’s episode of MOAM, we spoke to Miracle! Miracle is the SEO Lead for MoneySupermarket Group and got her start in the Digital Marketing Industry when she did an internship for a holiday homes company! Miracle is a motivational speaker and will be speaking at Women in Tech SEO 2022!

So where did I all begin for this marketer? Over to you Miracle…

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A documentary film-maker

What was your very first job?

I was part of a theatre troupe and we would go to school to put on plays for kids and teach them to dance

How did you first discover digital marketing / your specific industry sector?

I did an internship in a company that sold holiday homes, that was my first exposure to digital marketing. I actually started my career in PPC but decided that SEO was way more interesting so I legged it to the SEO department.

Share a mistake you made or an event you regret from your career:

I wish I had leapt from being task-driven and deliverable-centred to strategic thinking, speaking, and commercial-minded sooner. Knowing how to present information strategically is an art form. But I guess I had to go through that. Being an immigrant understanding the nuance of language was a steep learning curve.  It took me a while to build my confidence.

Jumping in a time machine, what advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Don’t wait until you get to the destination to start enjoying the journey because the destination will change several times. Enjoy your journey, comparison is the enemy of joy.

What industry skills do you wish you’d learned sooner and why?

I wish I had understood the value of my emphatic nature, and my people and relationship skills.  Recognising these traits as a strength and not a weakness has made me understand my management style and the uniqueness I bring to teams. This knowledge has empowered me to commercialise these traits. It has also led me to start my training to become a counsellor.

Who are you inspired by in the digital marketing industry?

Claire Carlile – Because she spreads so much joy

Jill Quick – Because she is always looking out for everyone

Kirsty Hulse – Because she knows how to laugh at herself

Nichola Stott – Because underneath that armour is a heart of Gold

Areej AbuAli – Because she gives so much of herself

Rejoice Ojiaku – Because she is not afraid to speak up

And all the members of the WITSEO forum who give up their time to share their knowledge in a non-condescending way, because of them there is so much more knowledge sharing in the industry than when I first started.

If you were to publish an autobiography in 20 years’ time, what would it be titled?

What an Interesting Life

What’s the one thing you want to be remembered for from your career, and why?

Being able to make complex information accessible to everyone. Being open and honest.

What subjects were you best at in school?

Literature
