From studying psychology to Founder and CEO!
During this blog series, we talk to accomplished digital marketing professionals from a variety of backgrounds about their career journeys with the aim of inspiring jobs seekers, aspiring freelancers and the trailblazing entrepreneurs amongst you!
Olivia is the Founder and CEO of Girls in Marketing, an e-learning platform and community on a mission to bridge the digital skills gap and equalise gender seniority in marketing. With a background in SEO, Olivia used her marketing talent to grow a following of over 170K marketers.
But where did it all begin for this marketer? Let’s jump straight in…
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. I loved the idea of sharing the knowledge I had with other people, and I guess Girls in Marketing is a way of doing that!
What was your very first job?
My very first job was at Mcdonald’s! Being in a customer-facing role definitely allowed me to be more confident and self-assured. Entering the workforce as soon as possible is something I will always advocate, as industry experience (no matter what it is!) is so important in terms of personal and professional development.
How did you first discover digital marketing / your specific industry sector?
I started writing a lifestyle blog, and it was only until I met my partner that I realised you could make money from writing. Win-win! With this in mind, I took a couple of online copywriting courses and was introduced to the idea of content writing. I took those skills further by taking on clients from freelance websites and eventually specialising in SEO strategy and content. That’s the biggest piece of advice I’d give to anyone – always be curious and learn more about a topic because you never know where it might lead you.
Share a mistake you made or an event you regret from your career:
I don’t regret much in my career, both as a marketer and a business owner. But one thing I would say is that I should have begun taking risks sooner. If you’re a freelancer or business owner, you’ll know how important it is to have the confidence to take risks. So I would definitely do more of that if I could!
Jumping in a time machine, what advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Cherish your university and education years. Although they are stressful and difficult (there’s no denying that) they are the most important years when it comes to learning, growing and making mistakes. Cherish the free time you have to start your own projects and get involved with activities. You will never regret doing too much at uni or in education. The reward is priceless!
What industry skills do you wish you’d learned sooner and why?
As an SEO expert, organic marketing is where my heart lies. So when I started my own business, I really wish I learnt about paid ads sooner and it’s something I’m still getting to grips with now!
Who are you inspired by in the digital marketing industry?
Although she is not a marketer, she IS a total business powerhouse and so I have to say my biggest inspiration is Deborah Meaden. I just think she is an all-around incredible female entrepreneur, investor and business leader. She would be number one on my list at a celebrity dinner party!
If you were to publish an autobiography in 20 years’ time, what would it be titled?
I’d have to say: Going With the Flow. This seems to be my life motto and everything I know, I have learned along the way just by going with the flow.
What’s the one thing you want to be remembered for from your career, and why?
Definitely helping people. Whilst I may not be helping people in the traditional way I expected as a child (like being a nurse or a teacher), I think I’ve found my own way of doing that in the marketing space. When all is said and done, I’d love to be remembered for being helpful, supportive and always inspiring people to shout about their passions.
What subjects were you best at in school?
IT, Business and English – pretty much the perfect combination for what I now do!
Thank you, Olivia, for taking part in this series. It’s always so nice to be able to share stories of marketers supporting others in the industry. We recommend everyone to follow Olivia on social media and to learn more about his positive impact on the industry!
